Lower Chitpur Road ends in Tiretti Bazaar that is located in the neighbourhood which was home to the first Chinatown or Cheenapara in Central Kolkata and is around 250 years old. Tiretti Bazaar is a public space, tucked between two large public buildings. This is the neighbourhood where the historic old Chinatown of Calcutta once bustled. The Bazaar morning breakfast market, known for its Chinese snacks, is a popular destination especially among the food and heritage enthusiasts of the city and the tourists that come looking for it. Cheenapara or Kolkata’s Chinatown is unique as it differs significantly from the typical idea of Chinatowns elsewhere. Enmeshed within the urban fabric of Kolkata, this is not a separate touristic entity but upholds a way of living alongside diverse communities. If you happen to take a walk around Tiretti Bazaar, you will find the neighbourhood dotted with Chinese clubs, temples, food joints, provision/sauce shops and a few beauty parlours owned by the Chinese. What’s the best way to know a neighbourhood, its people and its unique culture than to explore its different aspects with the locals? So for the first time, The Community Art Project (TCAP) invites you for a Walk with the Locals, the Indian Chinese, who grew up in Cheenapara and have seen and experienced the neighbourhood change over the years.
Other things to note
Participants need to reach the meeting point by 7.15 latest after which the walk starts
Chinese special breakfast by vendors from Tiretti Bazaar will be provided to the participant and is included in the ticket cost
