My Favourite Day Trip
This is a full day trip from Cable Bay and not as arduous as travelling from say the Bay of Islands.
Spiritually very significant for Maori, this is a MUST DO. But we would recommend hiring your own 4WD and travelling at your own pace the length of 90 Mile Beach, journey along Te Paki Stream, taboggan down the sand dunes, catch a massive ice cream at Te Kao Store. Have a picnic lunch at Tapotupotu, a beautiful bay very near the cape. Great experience at Cape Reinga, with photo opportunities. At low tide you can stop on the beach and gather tuatua - do the 'tuatua twist' in the sand, stop to admire wild horses, this is a wonderful day out for all especially families.

After a big day at Maitai Bay or Tokerau beach , it is great to wash off the salt in the cool fresh water lake behind Tokerau. The water is coca cola coloured, and gives you an instant tan. Nice private ish picnic area here too. A hidden gem!

NZ's Top 10 Beach
Beautiful horseshoe bay. One of the top 10 beaches in NZ. Great for a day trip, plenty of snorkeling opportunities, safe swimming and strolling to the end of the beach. Not much shade so be sure to take a hat etc. Heaven!

Neighbourhoods
Ex hippie sanctuary, there are wonderful organic stalls, awesome pottery, artists and artisans galore. Be prepared for gravel roads and scenic drives. For the brave adventurer, jump off the Fern Flat Road into the deep rock pool below. Finish off the day with a Rush Munroe ice cream from the Bush Fairy Dairy
Teenagers LOVE the adventure of jumping off the road into the Fern Flat River - several meter drop - just ask at the Bush Fairy Dairy if you need directions.
Blackberry picking opportunites everywhere, and finish up at the caravan takeaway store at Bush Fairy Dairy Thursdays to Sundays, especially in Summer. Vegan and vegetarian options and the Blue Beef Burger is Brian's fav. I like the falafels. The kids can have a jump on the trampoline while you wait. Very casual and friendly. Don't miss it. Also look out for the magnificent tree fern in the garden - unbelieveable!
