Drinks & Nightlife

Looking for things to do after the sun goes down? Once overshadowed by its clubbing counterparts Berlin and London, Budapest now stands tall as a truly unique nightlife destination. At its heart are ruin bars: enterprising locals transformed the shells of these old Soviet buildings into retro hotspots with a shabby-chic vibe that you'll wish you could take home with you. But that's not all – expect a huge spectrum of clubbing vibes, with gardens and courtyards aplenty in the vibrant Gozsdu Passage, within the Jewish Quarter. Don't forget about the wild and well-known pool party at Szechenyi Baths during the weekends (after a great meal at a local restaurant, of course) and a fabulous plethora of cocktail bars tucked away down secret passages. Nightlife in Budapest is just one giant surprise party: are you ready for it?

Budapest’s party vortex is Gozsdu Passage, a tunnel of buzzing bars and restaurants draped in fairy-lights, with open-air spaces that spill out into airy courtyards and gardens, right in the centre of trendy VII District. Why go? Start or end your night here. You’ll be spoilt for choice with karaoke and cocktails bars aplenty, touristy pubs and edgy cafes, and the area is a popular choice for both tourists and locals. (You can also head there in the early evening for a good choice of places to eat).

The first ruin pub in the City. Quirky ruin bars are Budapest’s most famous nightlife phenomena. The trend of revamping former factories and carparks into (almost) fully functioning watering holes, while allowing the character of the buildings to remain (by keeping the Communist junk and crumbling courtyards), started with Szimpla Kert back in 2002. When it moved to its current home in the Jewish quarter in 2004, it became the epicentre of Budapest’s nightlife – a title it still deservedly holds today. Why go? Despite the club having reached mega-famous status (you can now buy branded clothing inside), its weird and welcoming ethos remains the same.

Food Scene

Budapest’s food scene is a tasty metaphor for the city itself; hearty, haphazard and sprinkled with plenty of surprises. Spiced sausages (kolbasz) and seared duck-breast (kacsamell) are key features on the city’s food scene, which is comprised of wallet-friendly Michelin-starred restaurants, open-air eateries and cosy cafés. It’s fairly meaty-heavy, but there are vegan and vegetarian options available, with many restaurants also boasting menus that pay homage to the capital’s Jewish community. One thing’s for certain, your taste-buds won’t be bored. Tasting your way through the city's food scene is a must thing to do while in Budapest. Take a look at the best restaurants in Budapest.

What is it? A Michelin-starred restaurant with meat-laden dishes and over 200 wines on the menu. Why go? This restaurant isn’t just for Michelin glory-hunters, foodies will love the first-class menu, too. Although a trip here won’t be the cheapest meal of your Budapest break, it’s hard not to be impressed by what’s available on the outstanding five-course menu, featuring a creamy kohlrabi soup with hazelnuts, and a succulent plate of lamb. À la carte offerings are also fabulous – especially their spiced risotto, with seamlessly blended flavours.

What is it? An award-winning restaurant with a wine list longer than your table. Why go? József Bock is the man behind the wine list here. His ancestors have been making wine for nine generations in the Villány region of Hungary. (Since the 18th century!) More than two-dozen of the family’s wines are on the menu at this little gem in District 7 – as well as other vintages. Food wise the joint keeps it old school too, with a menu of traditional Hungarian dishes and classic local flavours. Think steak, beef tartare ‘sandwiches’ and cucumber salads. Make sure to pre-book, you’re unlikely to get a table otherwise.

What is it? Szechenyi Baths are so much more than a decadent location in which to slot in some sauna time, they’re actually home to one of the city’s most raucous nighttime events, known as the Sparty. It’s a full-on rave in a thermal spa. And that means pumping house music, pricey cocktails, an anything-goes atmosphere and pools teeming with… people. Why go? When else will you get to party in the spectacular setting of a twentieth-century Turkish bath house? This one’s not for the faint of heart, but you’ll be surrounded by plenty of other tourists where you’ll get to swim/dance the night away in a giant pool illuminated by lasers and flashing lights. All-male stag parties are not welcome and that security is on-hand all through the night to create a safe atmosphere for all.
