Chicago's Underground Pedway & Other Secrets Walking Tour
Discover a part of Chicago only known by locals -- our miles-long system of underground tunnels known as "The Pedway." This engaging adventure pops you in and out of beautiful buildings, familiarizes you with the most interesting parts of the Pedway, and shows you the best hidden details downtown that people walk by every day. This is not a typical "must-see" tour for typical tourists -- it's a "must see" experience for travelers who want something BEYOND what's typical. The tour begins with an introduction to downtown Chicago's famous "Pedway" -- the mysterious system of passageways and tunnels that keeps us all warm & dry in bad weather, and cool in the summer. Walking under entire blocks, we'll access interiors that seem to come up out of nowhere, stumbling upon hidden corridors of stained glass, underground swimming pools, and more. We'll then use what we learn in the first part of the tour to navigate the least-known parts of the Pedway, ending with a beautiful interior in one of the most unique and famous buildings in the country. Guests should be prepared to be on their feet for about 2 hours. It is an easy walk, but still -- it's a little bit of exercise, and please be aware that there are several sets of stairs! Join us for a fascinating exploration of downtown Chicago, both from above and below!
Phat Kat's Essential Detroit Tour
We'll meet at the Fisher Building on West Grand Boulevard for a tour of what I personally consider to be the Detroit Essentials. As we drive from stop to stop, I'll point out Detroit architecture and significant cultural places, and share details and trivia only a native Detroiter would know--and talk about changes I've seen in the city through the years. From the Fisher Building, we will travel to the Motown Museum, the Packard Plant, the Heidelberg Project, Eastern Market, Belle Isle, Joe Louis monument, Michigan Central Station, Corktown, and the Guardian Building. We'll end up back at the Fisher Building, where you can peruse the goods at The Pure Detroit store and show off your honorary Detroiter status when you return home. I love to answer questions about what Detroit was like growing up in the '70s and '80s and about my musical career--especially the early days when I worked with such Detroit legends as the late great producer J. Dilla.
Explore hidden bars in Chicago
Chicago offers a lot of hidden bars for night owls. We will start the night at my favorite hidden gem in West Loop, we will spend about one hour here then head to the next bar which is an 8 minute walk. Some of the bars have secret entrances so be ready for a fun night. The bars have amazing cocktails, beers, non-alcoholic drinks, good music and a good ambiance. There are plenty of secret bars and unfortunately we cannot explore all of them in one night. However, I will share with you the location of other secret bars which you can visit later. Please be advised that drinks or food are NOT included. This is not prohibition level speakeasy tour, this is a chill bar hopping experience. I was not born in the early 1900s and don’t know anything about prohibition so don’t ask. Have a drink and relax. Please note the experience time says it lasts 3 hours but you are welcomed to stay at the bars as long as you like. If your preferred hour is fully booked, don't worry, bar fits a fair amount of people, send me a message.
Wine and Bitcoin
Do you like wine? Do you want to learn about bitcoin? In this experience, you will learn about the history, origin, and purpose of bitcoin, as well as what it is, how it works, and the effect it is having on the world. You will receive direct personal help in setting up your own wallet and making your first transactions - all while having a glass or two of vino :) We'll enjoy snacks and beverages - Mimosas are provided on the Friday morning events and wine on all other ones - if beer is more your thing, feel free to bring it. This is a relaxed learning environment where there are no stupid questions. After introductions, we'll start by putting things into context with a brief history of money, and then move on to the basics of what bitcoin is. From there we will move on to volatility, government involvement, energy use, environmental impact, and the El Salvador legal tender situation. Next, we'll discuss the basics of how bitcoin works. The Lightning network, major exchanges, wallet types and risks will be touched upon. Finally, we will set up wallets, learn how to do transactions, and conclude with a Q&A. If you have a large group, corporate entity, small business, or would like to inquire about a weekend event to fit your schedule, or would prefer that I come to your group (within Michigan), feel free to send me a message. Follow-up classes are available on request.
Owner-guided tour of organic winery/farm
I will give guests an owner-guided tour of Green Bird Cellars, our 15 acre organic winery and farm located in a magical valley in Leelanau County, Michigan. We believe in fully integrated farming practices that use animals to help prune, mow, and fertilize our apple orchard, grape vines, and veggie garden, which we farm for fresh and hard cider, wine, and vegetables all sold in our tasting room. We will explore the workings of our vineyard and wine cellar, from vine to bottle, as well as see our animal helpers along the way - sheep and chickens! We will start in the orchard, then check on our young grape vines before going to the pasture pen to see the animals. After a stop in the veggie garden we will go see the mature grape vines After touring the farm and learning about different aspects of growing wine grapes, raising animals, and growing organic vegetables, we will go through the cellar where the wine magic happens, and learn about the process of making our low-intervention, estate-grown wine and cider. Finally, guests will be given samples of some of our wines and ciders in a guided tasting. Guests will leave with a knowledge of the inner-workings of a small family farm that is making great tasting wine and cider in a way that regenerates the landbase and heals the Earth.
Wild Mushroom Foraging
Interested in learning about and foraging for wild mushrooms? As a certified Wild Mushroom Expert, I will lead you on a two hour mushroom foraging adventure on our 14 acre off-grid, small-scale farm. We will enjoy a nice walk in the woods (with 100-year old trees!) to check out known growing sites for both medicinal and edible species. During this experience you will learn basic mushroom identification characteristics, typical habitat features, and when to expect certain mushrooms to be growing. We will also discuss ways to prepare, preserve, and use the wild mushrooms.
Sip and Paint cool Picasso art at Lake Michigan
Beginners shine here ... even if you've never held a paint brush, just a wine glass! This high-energy one-of-a-kind art experience will bring out your hidden bohemian self as you walk in the eccentric sandals of the most influential artist in modern art history! This is not a "paint-by-number" class, you'll have freedom. Canvas board travels compactly, is lighter, and frames easier so we'll paint on that, not stretched canvas. Please arrive with an open mind about what "real" art is and a hunger to learn more. Jackie tells the best stories ... Pablo was both bawdy and naughty so you'll hear all about it, intended to enhance your understanding of his passions. You'll get a personal photo of the select artwork for your reference and photos of his greatest love / muse. I'll offer tips if you feel stuck. Over 21? BYOB - you're on the Wine Trail with over 40 cideries, distilleries & wineries. Bring donuts, sandwiches, a thermos of coffee, wine or anything you want. I'll provide tons of humor, all art supplies and will take photos of you with your own camera if you'd like. This is so much fun!!!
