I was seven years old when I first discovered this grand art museum and the happiness that comes from studying works from another time. I’m still fascinated by the efforts and sacrifices made by those who collect and preserve over 35,000 works of art—all from different eras that retrace our history! For the sculptural highlights, I suggest beginning in the Caryatides room, which will lead you directly to the Venus de Milo and the Winged Victory of Samothrace, two world-famous treasures.

Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris 15 min walks from the flat Home to the famous Mona Lisa painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the Louvre Museum is one of the most famous art galleries in the world today. Even if you don’t visit the museum itself, you simply can’t travel to Paris without taking at least one picture in front of the impressive Louvre Pyramid.

The Louvre, or the Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre ), is the world's most-visited museum, and a historic landmark in Paris, France. It is the home of some of the best-known works of art, including the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement (district or ward). At any given point in time, approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are being exhibited over an area of 72,735 square meters. The Louvre museum is located inside the Louvre Palace, in the center of Paris, adjacent to the Tuileries Gardens. The two nearest Métro stations are Louvre-Rivoli and Palais Royal-Musée du Louvre, the latter having a direct underground access to the Carrousel du Louvre commercial mall. The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built in the late 12th to 13th century under Philip II. Remnants of the Medieval Louvre fortress are visible in the basement of the museum. Due to urban expansion, the fortress eventually lost its defensive function, and in 1546 Francis I converted it into the primary residence of the French Kings. The building was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace. In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leaving the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection, including, from 1692, a collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. In 1692, the building was occupied by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, which in 1699 held the first of a series of salons. The Académie remained at the Louvre for 100 years. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces.

Each visit to the capital deserves a visit to the Louvre, as the largest museum in Paris holds treasures. It brings together works of Western art from the Middle Ages to 1848, ancient Eastern, Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan, Roman, graphic, and Islamic arts. From room to room, the old royal palace reveals its masterpieces: the Mona Lisa, The Raft of the Medusa, the Venus of Milo, The Victory of Samothrace ... In total, some 35,000 works! In its eight centuries of existence, the Louvre has been marked by many architectural trends, from the 12th century medieval fortress to the Pei glass pyramid (1989). Latest addition: architects Mario Bellini and Rudy Ricciotti have designed the new showcase for the Islamic Arts, an undulating canopy covering the Visconti courtyard and flooding the 2,800 m² of the new department with light. Visiting the museum is particularly pleasant at night: less frequented, the Louvre offers a different atmosphere and breathtaking views of the Pyramid of Pei, the Cour Carrée and the Seine.
